Ask ModelCo: How to contour your cheeks
Q. I want supermodel cheekbones without supermodel DNA, can you help me fake them?
While the majority of us may not have been blessed with Gisele Bündchen’s razor sharp angles, we sure know how to fake it. There is a little more to contouring than just reaching for the bronzer. However forget the multi-step tutorials, mastering a few of these insider tips will have you feigning incredible genes and mastering this cheek trickery in no time.
The basic concept of contouring is that the areas that fall into ‘shadow’ on your face (along the hairline, beneath cheekbones, down the sides of your nose and the jawline) should be accentuated with a darker product, while the middle areas of your face (top of the cheekbones, bridge of the noes, forehead etc) should be tackled with a lighter, highlighting product. Adopting this shadow/light format will ensure your face looks more angular and defined.
A makeup artist once let us in on a little secret – that the fastest way to contour the face is to think of applying it down your face in a ‘3’ shape. Armed with ModelCo Bronze (always Matte for contouring!) and a powder brush, swipe two half moon shapes from the top of your forehead to cheekbone, and then from the cheekbone to the jawline. Voila! Sucking in your cheekbones a la Zoolander will assist in this process, accentuating the ‘hollows’ where you want to be applying the bronzer.
Now it’s time to highlight. Grab your Luminosity Skin Highlighter and gently use your fingers to blend a small amount onto the highest point of your cheekbones, from directly below the middle of your eye and blend it in and up towards your temple. Then, create a semi-circle so you finish at your brow bone. Those light reflecting pigments are working to accentuate your cheekbones and contrast against the dark, bronzer shadowing. Note: You shouldn’t be applying any product over the bronzer.
Lastly, a dab of ModelCo Cheek and Lip Tint on the apples of your cheek will impart a natural flush, pulling the whole look together. Take a little look in the mirror. See those angles? You were (practically) born with it!
